Following the success of our “Summer School IT Law and Legal Informatics” 2017 the Institute of Legal Informatics held its second Summer School from the 20th to the 31st August 2018.

Taking place in an international setting, participants from over 13 different nationalities were present. This international presence was also reflected within our lecturers who came from Luxembourg, France, Japan, Scotland, and Germany. The Summer School started with an opening speech from the dean of the faculty of law Prof. Dr. Roland Michael Beckmann. Participants had the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics in the field of legal informatics such as “Artificial Intelligence”, “Data Protection”, IT-Security, and “Legal Tech”. One of the highlights, of the Summer School was a keynote by Mrs. Delvaux-Stehres, who was a member of the European Parliament.

The Summer School is always accompanied by a comprehensive social program which allows the participants an insight into the region of Saarland as well as a hands-on experience in learning about cutting edge technology. Visits to the KÜS Rechenzentrum and to the Völklinger Hütte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have become a staple part of the Summer School. Participants were also given the opportunity to interact with each other and the lecturers in a more informal setting with excursions around the city of Saarbrücken which was conducted by former Secretary of State, Dr. Wolfgang Schild, as well as a trip to Strasbourg.
