General Terms and Conditions
Article 1 (Key Definitions)
Summer School: This refers to the annual summer school event on IT Law and Legal Informatics organised by the Institute of Legal Informatics, Saarland University, Germany. The Summer School is aimed at young researchers and practitioners keen to discuss current topics on IT Law and Legal Informatics in an international forum.
Applicant: This refers to an individual who has successfully completed the online registration form for the Summer School and submitted all required documents for the application process.
Participant: This refers to an individual who has received an acceptance letter into the Summer School program and has paid the required school fee within the stipulated timeframe.
Contributing Participant: This refers to participants who have indicated their intention to present an excerpt of their own research project at the Summer School, by submitting a proposal related to one of the Summer School topics alongside their application.
Summer School Administration: This refers to the Summer School organisers, led by Prof. Dr. Georg Borges, Managing Director of the Institute of Legal Informatics at Saarland University, Germany.
Article 2 (Eligibility Requirement)
The Summer School is open to graduates of law, computer science, as well as from other disciplines to which IT Law or Legal Informatics are relevant. The Summer School is also open to practitioners from the field of law and computer science and to undergraduate students in the above-mentioned disciplines. It is not necessary to be a student at Saarland University to apply. Yet, an essential prerequisite for participation is a distinctive interest in cross-disciplinary and international collaboration.
Article 3 (Registration)
An applicant must complete the online registration form and submit all required documents.
Applications are considered on a rolling basis until a maximum of 30 applicants have been accepted.
By applying, the intending participant confirms that he/she will attend all the sessions for which he/she has applied and, in the case of a contributing participant, that he/she will, present orally if his/her application for contribution is admitted by the Summer School Administration.
Article 4 (Acceptance and Enrollment into the Summer School Program Upon Payment)
The Summer School Administration reserves the exclusive right and discretion to decide on applicants who are accepted into the Summer School program.
Acceptance is pending upon timely receipt of payment. This means that any proof of acceptance for visa purposes can only be given upon receipt of payment.
Failure to complete the payment within the stipulated timeframe will result in the forfeiture of an applicant’s place in the Summer School to another eligible applicant.
All banking fees and transfer costs associated with the Summer School fees must be borne by the participant.
Article 5 (Cancellation Policy)
Any participant who no longer wishes to attend the Summer School must communicate this intention well in advance by email to the Summer School Administration.
Cancellation can be communicated and effected without being subject to a charge, save for associated transfer fee, up to 40 days prior to the commencement of the Summer School.
Cancellation communicated within 40 days to the commencement of the Summer School shall be effected subject to a 20% charge on the refundable school fee.
For cancellation communicated after the commencement of the Summer School, no school fee refund is due. The entire Summer School fee will be charged.
The Summer School Administration reserves the right to cancel the Summer School program before commencement if the situation warrants. Should this occur, the already paid fee will be refunded. No additional claims shall be entertained.
Article 6 (Summer School Program Description)
The in-class and out-of-class activities, as described on the Summer School website, are subject to changes. Such changes, if necessary, may include, but are not limited to, changes to lecturers, programme schedules, or social programs.
In the event of a change, the participant is not entitled to claim partial or full reimbursement of the school fee paid.
Article 7 (Participant Conduct)
Participants are expected to maintain high standards of academic integrity and respect towards instructors and peers. Plagiarism, harassment, or disruptive behaviour will result in disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the Summer School, without a refund.
Article 8 (Data Protection)
The private data of the applicant submitted for the purpose of registration in the Summer School are subject to Saarland University’s Data protection rules, which can be found here.
The participant consents that photos or videos taken during his/her participation in the Summer School and in which he/she can be seen may be published by the Summer School Administration for public relations purposes.
Article 9 (Dispute Resolution)
A dispute or claim connected to an applicant’s registration and/or participation in the Summer School shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of German courts and governed by German law.
